That’s a very fair question, and it’s something a lot of people wonder about.
With private practice therapy, you’re working directly with one clinician, me, who is responsible for your care. How sessions are structured, how your treatment evolves over time, and the quality of your care. Sessions are scheduled, focused, and tailored specifically to you.
Platforms like BetterHelp are not mental health focused, they’re big Tech. Therapists are typically managing higher volumes of clients, communication is often more asynchronous, and the structure of care can be less consistent.
Some people are looking for lower-cost, flexible support. Others are looking for a more consistent, individualized space to work through something in depth.
If you’re trying to decide, it can help to ask yourself:
Do I want something more flexible and lower cost, or something more structured and personalized?
Also, BigTech Therapy will sell your personal information, while I am bound by HIPPA and ethical care.

Therapy begins with an intake session. From there, I ask that you commit to weekly sessions for the first 4-5 weeks. This gives you the best chance to begin seeing results.
Many of my clients reach their goals within 3-9 months. Others benefit from ongoing support and we work together longer.

There are benefits to starting therapy before a crisis, during a trauma, while or after losing a loved one, and/or after something overwhelming.
Sometimes, starting therapy when "things are fine" can give you an advantage when life inevitably becomes stressful.
Of course, starting therapy during or after an overwhelming event can give you the space and tools to navigate a really hard time.
Give me a call and we can talk about your situation and how therapy can help.

I use “therapy,” “counseling,” and “psychotherapy” interchangeably.
I think most people in this field do the same :)

Privacy and flexibility are really important to me. Insurance companies can restrict and intrude on the therapy process.
Investing in yourself financially increases the likelihood of achieving your desired results.
You can use Thrizer to submit superbills if you have OON benefits through your insurance. They help you get reimbursed faster than submitting them yourself.
As an LCSW (social worker), I am committed to equity and social justice. I dedicate my time to non-profit and pro bono therapy work with Kindred Heart Therapy Group in California and The Refugee Development Center in Michigan. I also volunteer with the Routt County Humane Society.

Yes, online therapy is both secure and effective. I use HIPAA compliant systems and our video sessions are protected. All therapy interventions that we will use are effective online.

AI can be helpful for reflection, learning, anf organizing thoughts.
You might use it to better understand what you’re feeling, and that can be a really meaningful first step.
Therapy is different.
Therapy is a relationship. Your therapist is actively paying attention to you, tracking patterns over time, and responding in a way that’s shaped by your history, your nervous system, and your specific experiences.
It’s about working through things in real time… noticing what comes up, where you get stuck, how your patterns show up in relationships, decisions, and your body.
If you’re looking for information or quick clarity, tools like ChatGPT can be useful.
If you’re looking to actually process something, shift patterns, or feel differently over time, therapy offers something deeper.
